Trips for Kids Ottawa's mission is to enrich the lives of economically disadvantaged, new-to-Canada youth, through outdoor activities to develop physical skills, gain environmental knowledge, form positive relationships and provide leadership opportunities.
In 2007, Cat Weaver started an after school program loaning out her helmets and bikes to kids that didn't have their own. At the same time, she started the process of applying for incorporation and started a dialogue with Trips for Kids National. The after school program took off like wild fire, and Cat was so busy running the program that she had to put the incorporation on the back burner for a few years. Mountain Biking Children and Teens, MTBCAT, was a one person show and was serving approximately 30-40 kids per season. In the winter of 2010, a local news channel ran a story on the program and this brought a few people Cat’s way. They wanted to help and lent a hand to get the non-profit incorporation done and completed the application to Trips for Kids National. Nearly three years since Cat’s first after school rides, we are finally a Trips for Kids Chapter.
Statement of Membership in TFK International:
Trips for Kids Ottawa is a member of Trips for Kids® International a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization based in Marin County, California. Founded in 1988 and now operating in over 80 locations throughout the United States, Canada and Israel, Trips for Kids (TFK®) International has opened the world of cycling to over 100,000 at-risk youth through guided mountain bike rides and job training/earn-a-bike programs. All TFK chapters, modeled on the foundation of the original TFK Marin program, are managed and operated independently at the local level but share a common goal. Their mission is to use bicycles as a vehicle for lessons in confidence building, achievement, health, fitness and environmental awareness through the development of practical skills and the simple act of having fun.
Who We Are
Trips for Kids Ottawa, is located in the West end of Ottawa and provides recreational and educational activities, such as mountain biking, fishing, hiking and exploring nature. Our rides, on off-road trails in the Greenbelt and Kanata South Marsh, provide physical challenges and opportunities to learn new skills while affording the kids a rare opportunity to get outside and breathe fresh air. We have opportunities to learn trail building through our friends at the Ottawa Mountain Bike Association. We serve all kids between 7-17 years old that want to participate.
Trips for Kids Ottawa is incorporated as a non-profit organization under section 126(1) of the Corporations Act of the Province of Ontario since August 2010 and is an official Trips for Kids Chapter since January 2011.
Trips for Kids Ottawa is governed by a Board of Directors that set policies, oversee financial management, consider recommendations and provide direction to volunteers. We are public servants, private sector employees, corporate and private citizens. We are individuals who want to make a difference and give back to the community.
